Numbered-Ball Hand-Eye Tracking
Hitter calls a number/color on the incoming ball before swinging. Logs read accuracy.
Your job today
I’ll toss balls with numbers or colors on them. Shout what you see, then only swing if it’s a strike.
What good looks like: Call it right 4 of 5 times and still take a balanced swing at strikes.
Why it matters: The best hitters see the ball early and decide fast. Training your eyes to read the ball is how you stop chasing and start crushing strikes.
How it works
Coach front-tosses balls marked with numbers or colors. The hitter must call the mark out loud as the ball arrives, then take or swing only at strikes. Trains the eyes to track the ball deep and pick up spin and location before the hands commit. Logs call accuracy and hard-hit rate on swings.

Equipment
- L-screen

Setup
- Mark balls with two numbers or colors
- Set L-screen at age-appropriate distance
- Bucket of marked balls within reach
Run the drill
- Coach front-tosses a marked ball
- Hitter calls the mark out loud, then takes or swings at strikes
- Log call correctness and swing result
Coaching cues
- See the ball out of the hand
- Call it, then react
- Track it all the way to the bat
Common mistakes
- Guessing the call before the ball is readable
- Letting the call distract from a balanced swing
- Swinging at balls
Scoring
Track % correct calls (percent). On-track when at or above 70.
Adjust it
Make it easier
- easier: call color only, no take/swing rule
Make it harder
- intro: two colors, slow toss
- intermediate: numbers 1-4, game-speed toss
- advanced: call the mark + execute take/swing on strikes only
Variations
- Spin read: Mark balls so the spin direction reveals the call
