Infield Triangle Read

FieldingFull field15 minAges 9-12, 13-152-6 playersIntensity: normalPitch Smart OK

Coach hits 3 grounders per round; fielder shows triangle approach + read.

Your job today

Three ground balls per round — one to your right, one straight, one to your left. Field it clean, then make an accurate throw to first.

What good looks like: Glove down early, work THROUGH the ball, and put the throw chest-high to first.

Why it matters: This is the most-repeated play in baseball. A clean ground ball plus a catchable throw equals an out — every single time.

How it works

Coach fungoes 3 grounders per round (right, middle, left). Fielder demonstrates triangle approach, glove read, and accurate throw to first. Logs clean fields and on-target throws.

Adjust it

Make it harder

  • intermediate: fungoes at varied speeds
  • advanced: double-play feeds

Variations

  • Short hop only: deliberate short hops

Safety

  • counts toward throw volume
  • PITCH_SMART_GENERAL: Pitch Smart is the canonical guideline set for youth pitch counts and required rest. Throwing volumes, rest days, and allowed pitch types must defer to Pitch Smart's age-banded tables. Compliance program available for orgs.
  • STOP_ON_PAIN: Distinguish acceptable muscle soreness from joint pain or severe muscle ache. Any pain, pop, or possible injury must be reported to a parent, coach, or trusted adult, and the activity stopped immediately. Any sign of illness or injury must be evaluated before returning.
