Outfield Drop-Step Ladder

FieldingFull field8 minAges 9-12, 13-151-4 playersIntensity: normalPitch Smart OKAdult supervision

Drop-step + cross-over to a tagged spot, 8 reps each direction.

Your job today

Coach points left or right. Your first move is to turn that hip back and sprint — no backpedal, no false step.

What good looks like: First foot moves in the right direction on at least 12 of 16 reps.

Why it matters: Routes in the outfield are decided in the first step. Wrong step = the ball drops; right step = you’re under it.

How it works

Outfielder starts in athletic stance. Coach points right or left; outfielder executes a drop-step with the called foot and sprints to a cone 15 feet away. Focus on the FIRST step direction.

Run the drill

Coaching cues

  • Hips open first
  • No false step forward

Common mistakes

  • Step toward the ball with the wrong foot first
  • Backpedaling instead of turning

Scoring

Track % clean drop-steps (percent). On-track when at or above 75.

Adjust it

Make it easier

  • easier: Walk-through tempo

Make it harder

  • advanced: Coach throws a fly ball after the point

Variations

  • Reaction-only: Coach uses random hand signal

Safety

  • STOP_ON_PAIN: Distinguish acceptable muscle soreness from joint pain or severe muscle ache. Any pain, pop, or possible injury must be reported to a parent, coach, or trusted adult, and the activity stopped immediately. Any sign of illness or injury must be evaluated before returning.
